This topic is a toughy for me because I feel like I have been given so much great advice throughout the years, some of which I have listened to and some of which I remembered after the fact- ha. And since I am having such a hard time narrowing down the advice candidates, I decided to stick with the tried and true advice of Paul the Apostle himself. Colossians 3 and 4 have always been some of my favorite chapters in the Bible. The subject matter is on "rules for holy living" and it just makes sense. These verses have been my go-tos for my kitchen black-boards, dorm room white boards and mirror sticky-notes. There is some great stuff in these verses, so here is my hand-me-down piece of advice for you.....
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts and let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful
Pray that the mystery of Christ may be proclaimed clearly
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity
Let your conversations be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."
